Lindsey Carr ~ Halcyon DaysThe term ‘Halcyon’ is rarely used outside of the saying ‘Halcyon days’, but the term itself means Happy or Carefree and originally referred to a bird of Greek myth and a period of 14 days of calm weather around the Winter Solstice.
The mythical creature was commonly associated with the Kingfisher which were believed at the time to nest at sea and have the ability to calm the tides. (Kingfishers actually nest in holes and other cavities)
The birds portrayed are the Belted Kingfisher and the Common (or River) Kingfisher.
